humboldtii from Humboldt; named after Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), then laborious as mining-expert at Bayreuth and Anspach and already known for his studies on the subterrean (?) flora of the Erzgebirge near Freiberg. In 1797 he retreated to private live [ambteloos leven] and went to Paris in 1798 in order to prepare a long journey through tropical South America, which he fulfilled from 1799-1804, with Bonpland (see ...) as plantcollector on his own expenses. The results of that journey which were elaborated by Von Humboldt from 1808-27, and -as far as the botanical part was concerned- by Kunth (see ...), were in many aspects so important that they called Von Humboldt the second Columbus. In 1805 he had already published his celebrated Essai sur la géographie des plants. In 1827 he established himself in Berlin, where he moved frequently in court-circles with the king of Prussia, who charged him for several times with half-diplomatic missions. In 1829 he undertook a big journey to Russia; in 1856 he gave the impulse to the foundation of the Meteorological and Magnetical Observatory at Weltevreden (Batavia).
